Hello, art lovers! Welcome back to my blog, where I’m sharing the heart and soul of my journey as an artist. In my first post, I invited you into my cozy studio, where relaxing music plays, my cat Whiskers naps, and my drawpad hums with ideas. Last time, I introduced my quirky Monday to Friday collection, filled with creatures like Glorp and Squish. Today, I’m pulling back the curtain on something exciting and nerve-wracking: the journey to launching my online art shop. As I prepare to share my whimsical art with the world, I’m learning that building a shop takes discipline, organization, and a refusal to compromise on quality. If you’re curious about turning a passion into a business—or just want to support my launch—join me for this behind-the-scenes look!

The Dream: Turning Sketches into a Shop

Ever since I started doodling comical creatures on my big drawpad, with soft lo-fi beats in the background and Whiskers curled up nearby, I dreamed of sharing my art with others. Those sketches—of blobby Glorp grumbling “I hate Mondays!” or giggly Squish floating in a dreamworld—felt like little pieces of my heart. But turning that passion into an online shop? That’s a whole new adventure. I’m not there yet, but I’m getting closer every day, and it’s all about staying disciplined and keeping my standards high. Here’s how I’m making it happen.

What is going on here?!

Step 1: Perfecting the Art

The foundation of any art shop is the work itself, and that means paying close attention to detail. I learned early on that size matters—literally. When creating pieces like my Monday to Friday collection, I ensure my digital files are the right dimensions so nothing gets trimmed off during printing. Whether it’s a large Friday print with Drippus or a small Tuesday piece with Squish, every detail has to be perfect.

For physical sketches, I use a high-quality scanner to create digital replicas that capture every line and texture. My Mac helps me tweak colors and ensure the files look crisp. File formats are another big lesson: PNGs for transparent backgrounds, JPEGs for web previews, and high-resolution TIFFs for printing. I also compress files for online use without losing quality, so my shop’s images load fast but look stunning. Compromising on these details can lead to blurry prints or unhappy customers, so I’m disciplined about getting it right from the start.

Step 2: Building the Shop

Choosing a platform for my shop was a big decision. Many artists use Shopify for its simplicity, and I totally get why—it’s user-friendly and handles a lot of the techy stuff. I went with a custom-built website to match my quirky style, but both options have costs and trade-offs. A custom site gives me creative control, but it takes more time to set up. Shopify might be faster, but it comes with monthly fees. Either way, the goal is the same: a shop that showcases my art, like my whimsical prints, in a way that feels inviting and professional.

I’m also meticulous about the shop’s design—clear navigation, vibrant images, and descriptions that tell the story of each piece. For example, my Monday print comes with a note about Glorp’s grumpy charm. Setting a high standard here is crucial; a sloppy shop can break the dream before it even starts.

On Wednesday - they'll be back...

Step 3: Printing and Shipping

Figuring out how to get my art to customers is a puzzle. Do I print and ship myself or use a dropshipping provider? Printing at home gives me control over quality, but it’s time-consuming. Dropshipping outsources the work, which is simpler, but it means relying on a partner to meet my standards—and it’s not cheap. I’m leaning toward a mix: printing smaller pieces myself and partnering with a trusted provider for larger orders.

I’m also debating add-ons like frames. They’d make my prints a complete experience, but shipping glass is tricky and expensive. For now, I’m focusing on unframed prints to keep things simple, but I’m open to framed options later. Every choice requires research and discipline to ensure customers get the best experience without cutting corners.

Step 4: Lighting the Ember

Launching a shop is like trying to start a fire from a tiny ember—you have to keep fanning it to build momentum. I’m using free social media to spread the word, sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses of my studio and teasers of my Monday to Friday collection. Posts about Squish’s goofy grin or Drippus’s wild colors get people excited. Once the shop launches, I’ll experiment with boosted posts or ads, but only after orders start trickling in. The key is consistency—posting regularly, engaging with followers, and keeping the energy high.

It’s a lot like getting a plane off the ground. The takeoff is complex, with so many things that can go wrong if you’re not careful. But once you’re in the air, it’s smoother sailing. I’m still on the runway, double-checking every detail, but I’m ready to fly.

Keeping the Dream Alive

What keeps me going is discipline and a refusal to compromise. Every time I’m tempted to rush a sketch or skip a quality check, I remind myself: cutting corners now can form habits that dim the dream later. My goal is to launch a shop that makes people smile, whether they’re buying a Monday print or just browsing. I’m almost there, and I’d love for you to be part of it.

As I prepare to launch, explore my shop and join me for the big moment. Stay tuned for my next post, where I’ll share tips on styling art in small spaces—perfect for making my whimsical creatures shine in your home!

Thanks for cheering me on. Drop a comment: what’s one thing you’re doing to chase your dream?
